Anchorage Boy meets penguins, on his way to the Antarctic

December 23, 2013

Anchorage, AK

Fifteen-year-old Sam can’t get enough of the cold weather.

After being diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition requiring multiple open-heart surgeries, Sam is focusing his mind on something else: his one most heartfelt wish. Sam will experience his wish to go on an Antarctic Cruise on January 1, thanks to Make-A-Wish® Alaska. But first, he will experience a little bit of Antarctic zoology closer to home.

Monday, Dec. 23rd

2 p.m.:  Sam arrives at the Alaska Zoo Greenhouse for a VIP presentation on the Antarctic seals and penguins by Dr. Jennifer Burns, Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

You can “Pick Click Give a Wish!” to help Alaskan kids like Sam!
You can help wish kids like Sam when you choose “Make-A-Wish” when applying for your 2014 Permanent Fund Dividend. We invite you to Pick.Click.Give. to help grant life-affirming wishes to children battling life-threatening medical conditions. This year, our goal is grant six wishes for Alaskan children through these funds. Alaskan wishes granted by the Alaskan community—that’s our wish.

About Make-A-Wish® Alaska

Since 1986, Make-A-Wish Alaska has granted Alaskan wishes to more than 500 children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. This year, the local chapter will grant about 30 wishes, and an additional 30 wishes to kids from across the US who wish to visit Alaska as part of their wish. According to a 2011 U.S. study of wish impact, most health professionals surveyed believe a wish-come-true can influence the health of children. Kids say wishes give them renewed strength to fight their illnesses, and their parents say these experiences help strengthen the entire family. For more information about Make-A-Wish Alaska and how you can share the power of a wish® please call 800.304.9474, visit or connect with us at or on Twitter @MakeAWishAKWA.
