In the past three years, Make-A-Wish volunteer Lynette has fallen in love five times. First it was Anna, then Tylynn, then Yana, then Jamie and finally Blake.
And, she admits that it's bound to happen again as each wish child captivates her heart and the support from the local community reinforces her desire to be a part of this organization.
“Volunteering for Make-A-Wish has enriched my life,” she said. “I am humbled by the gifts I have in my life. The outpouring of generosity from so many companies and organizations has been amazing.”
Lynette’s favorite part of volunteering is meeting the child and being with the family when the child shares their wish. As much as Lynette herself has given to our local chapter, she shares that Make-A-Wish® Alaska and Washington has given back to her, as well.
One specific wish Lynette granted had an immense impact on her life. It was her first wish, for a five-year-old Anna who had a rare form of liver cancer. Before she was able to meet Anna, Lynette formed a relationship with the young girl’s mother in preparation to meet the family for the wish experience. In a terribly unfortunate turn, Anna passed away before her wish could occur. Lynette stayed close with Anna’s family as they adopted a five-year-old boy, Blake, who had with the same rare cancer as Anna. They met this boy in the hospital when Anna was there. When they found out he was battling the same awful disease in a foster home, they took him into their home and welcomed him as a member of the family forever. Little Blake went to Hawaii to swim with all the colorful fish, making this family’s Make-A-Wish experience come full circle!
