Wish kid Jack seemed like a perfectly healthy 13-year old boy—he loved playing sports with friends and had a very active lifestyle—when he suddenly collapsed in the middle of PE class.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he lay in a coma in critical condition for five days until doctors could perform surgery to give him a pacemaker/defibrillator. This is his story as told by his mom, Jennie.
“The moments after Jack’s collapse were pure torture. I just wanted them to end, but instead of a quick fix and a solution, minutes turned to hours, hours to days and days to months of waiting.
After what seemed like a lifetime of uncertainty, genetic testing finally revealed that Jack has a rare genetic heart condition, called Brugada Syndrome, which can cause cardiac arrest without warning. He now has a pacemaker so if it happens again, he’ll have a fighting chance.
Not long after this episode, a family friend reached out to Make-A-Wish on Jack’s behalf. She thought that a wish would help distract our family from our new normal and help us down the path to healing. I am so very grateful that we now have something wonderful to look forward to other than doctors’ appointments and tests.
When Jack first met his wish-granting volunteers, he knew what he wanted right away, it was a no-brainer.
Jack inherited his grandpa’s ’68 Ford truck when he was just four years old, and has played in it day and night ever since. So he wished to have this old, trusty truck completely renovated.
Now, Jack cherishes the time he spends in the truck because it makes him feel closer to his grandpa—and provides him with a safe place to relax. I can’t tell you how many hours he and his friends have spent playing in the back of the truck.
Make-A-Wish has rallied a community to help make Jack’s wish come true and we are so grateful. But, there is still work to be done. It’s going to take paint, upholstery and more to restore the old truck. We need you! Can we count on YOU to help grant Jack’s wish?"
It’s easy, just visit the Wishmaker website and make a $10 donation or more. Please donate now so Jack can realize his wish.
