Hawaii is known as a restorative place full of joy, relaxation and endless sun, but for wish recipient Hanna it is much more than that. Her wish trip to Hawaii gave her something to look forward to during the darkest times of her life.
At just 13 years old, this typical teen had to put her life on hold when she was diagnosed with leukemia.
She spent nine months in and out of the hospital undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatments that frequently brought on fevers and a myriad of other side effects. Life, for both Hanna and her family, was extremely difficult, uncertain and stressful. What they all needed was a little hope.
That hope came thanks to you, in the generous form of a wish.
“Knowing that Hanna was going to get a wish became our beacon of hope,” said Hanna's mom, Kelly.
“I wish and hope that the people who are donating their money and airline miles understand how amazing this is for families,” said Kelly. “What they are doing for other people is really impacting other people in a real way in a big way.”
In Hawaii, Hanna left the memories of the hospital behind. She went paddle-boarding, snorkeling and swam with dolphins. She even explored the volcanos and lava tubes.
But most importantly, Hanna found joy when she needed it most.
“Wishes are needed. They are important,” said Hanna. “Children and their families and happiness are very important, and that’s what Make-A-Wish did for me and my family. We got to be happy again.”
And, that happiness continues. “Our entire family gets to relive the incredible joy that the wish brought to us. It wasn’t just five days while we were in Hawaii, the wish remains constant,” Kelly said.
Now 15, Hanna is back in school and helps other kids going through treatment at the hospital. Through this experience, she’s decided she wants to be an oncologist someday, so that she can continue to help other kids with cancer.
You can help make wishes like Hanna’s come true when you donate your unused airline miles. Donate today!
Special thanks to Adopt-A-Wish® sponsor Jewelers for Children and wish-granting volunteers Tanya Wicks and Chris Tracy for helping to grant Hanna’s wish.
