“ It amazed me how many people came out with their hearts. ”

- Michelle, Sierra's mom

Seven-year-old Sierra was one tough cookie even before she put on her custom-made Spokane Police Department uniform and clipped on her official badge.

This girl has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma for more than a year, and she’s endured five rounds of chemo and 14 rounds of radiation.

Sierra might seem shy when you first meet her, but her wish speaks to her boundless courage and determination. Sierra wished to be a police officer to help protect the community.

Sierra wished to be a police officer. On the day her wish came true, Officer Sierra raised her right hand and was sworn into office by the Spokane Police Department. She underwent a morning of Spokane Police Academy training and the ropes about how to track and handcuff suspects.

By lunchtime on the day her wish came true, Sierra received her first call to duty: a dangerous robbery suspect was on the loose and had been spotted along the Spokane River.

Sierra and her fellow members of the Spokane Police Department went out on the boat patrol, with a helicopter spotter giving them tips from the air.

Ultimately, through the help of other officers and a special canine officer named Murphy, Sierra captured the robbery suspect, cuffed him, and delivered him to jail.
To end her day of service, Officer Sierra received a special medal at the City Council Chambers, presented by the mayor.

“I still don’t know how to say thank you to all the people that were a part of the day, said Sierra’s mom, Michelle. “ It really amazed me how many people were there and how many people came out with their hearts.”

It takes the entire community to make a wish like Sierra’s come true. Thank you for helping us grant Sierra’s wish to become a police officer—giving her a day when her courage and bravery went far beyond her battle with cancer and provided inspiration to the whole community.

Special Thanks: Spokane Police Department, Officer Teresa Fuller, Lieutenant Kevin King, Chief Craig Meidl, Sergeant Shawn Kendall, Sergeant Rob Boothe, Officer Tiffany Iverson, Temporary Law enforcement director Jim McDevitt, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and Air One, Mayor David Condon, City of Spokane, Law Enforcement Credit Union, Blumenthal’s Uniforms, Tom Engdahl Videography, Lindsay Powell Photography, Make-A-Wish Idaho, Wish-granting volunteers Angela Pashon and Kasey Barghout.
